Chapter 23 Hey~, Jenny~
Chapter 23 Hey~, Jenny~
The ventilation system in the safe house continuously emitted a low-frequency hum.
Jenny stared at the monitor wall.
Of the sixteen screens, fourteen were black, displaying "signal lost".
Of the two remaining images, one shows the empty stairwell of the main house, and the other shows the corridor outside the alloy door of the safe house.
That's the route without taking the elevator down.
It was just as deserted there, with only the cold white light cast by the overhead lamp.
It's too quiet.
Jenny's nails dug into her palm.
Not right.
As she calmed down from her initial panic, she noticed things she hadn't seen before.
Why is this safe house so quiet?
Tonight is the family's monthly gathering. Although most people leave after the gathering, at least a dozen close relatives should stay at the host's house.
The alarm went off until they took refuge in the safe house.
Why hasn't anyone else appeared after all this time?
Someone has to call out to them!
"Aunt Dani..."
Jenny spoke, her voice dry and hoarse.
Dani stood with her back to her, still in front of the control panel, her shoulders tense.
"Should we... contact someone else?"
"Activating the secure room automatically sends a message, while Harris and the others are outside."
Dani interrupted her, her tone curt.
"One hundred professional security guards, all of whom our family hired at great expense, have crawled out of piles of corpses."
"As long as it's not other families involved, it's just a false alarm."
really?
Dani Kildee is unsure.
She was just trying to convince herself.
Jenny shut her mouth.
There was only one thing they both kept silent about.
That means not opening the door.
Opening the door now would be too risky.
If the crisis has passed, you can go out to mourn or apologize later; at worst, you'll just lose some power and money.
If the condition is not resolved, opening the door is tantamount to suicide.
Anyway, there's plenty of food and supplies here.
wait.
Time stretched out in the silence.
Jenny stared at the remaining two images, her eyes stinging from dryness.
Suddenly, the screen in the stairwell went black.
"Signal lost".
Only one scene remains: the corridor outside the alloy door.
Jenny held her breath.
A few seconds later, a figure walked into the frame.
Carl Jensen.
He was wearing a leather jacket covered in dust and dark stains, carrying a rifle in his right hand and something in his left.
Jenny's pupils contracted instantly.
She could see clearly what it was carrying.
It was her father's Gundam head assembly, except that a cross had been cut out of it horizontally and vertically.
Jensen stopped in front of the goal.
He looked up at the camera.
He raised his hand and held the Gundam in front of the camera, paused for two seconds, and then moved his lips.
There was no sound, but the lip movements were clear:
Jenny Kildee, here I come.
The next second, the screen flickered and turned into a jumble of static.
"Signal lost".
All surveillance footage was completely black.
The indicator lights on the control panel remained on, indicating that the safe house system was functioning normally.
But the screen on the wall only displayed sixteen gray "No Signal" messages.
Jenny's face drained of color.
She slowly turned to Dani, her neck stiff.
She is afraid.
She was not only afraid of Jason outside the door, but also of Dani beside her.
I fear that this aunt might make a rational choice in this desperate situation.
For example, handing over the culprit in exchange for one's own survival.
Dani also turned around.
Her face was equally pale, her jaw clenched tightly, but her eyes were frighteningly calm.
"He can't get in."
Dani said in a very low voice, as if trying to convince herself.
"This door is made of a 28-centimeter-thick composite alloy, capable of withstanding direct fire from an anti-tank rocket launcher. It has twelve hydraulic locks, each with its own power supply, and automatically locks itself in the event of a power outage. This door is the only entrance."
She walked to the wall and knocked on the hidden door leading to the secret tunnel.
"The other exit is twenty kilometers away, and only your father, myself, and two family elders know about it. There's no way he could find it."
Jenny didn't say anything.
Dani stared at her, then suddenly forced a stiff smile:
"You don't think I'd hand you over, do you? Jenny, I'm not stupid. He'll let me go if I hand you over? Look what's happening out there."
Jenny swallowed, her throat tightening.
"So... what do we do now?"
"wait."
Dani sat down directly, but her hands remained in her pockets, where a Glock was.
"Once the safe house is activated, it will automatically contact the police station and other family members. They will definitely come for the sake of daily filial piety and the benefit of the family."
Although the police station is not their own, the sheriff is.
Unfortunately, Calvin Gilddy is dead, and a new Gilddy sheriff has not yet been elected.
Otherwise, the Kirdi family could have directly mobilized the local police department.
The two remained silent.
Dani rummaged through a cabinet and tucked a heavy pistol into her skirt.
The hum of the ventilation system seemed particularly loud at this moment.
Suddenly, Dani looked up.
"Did you hear me?"
Jenny was taken aback.
"What?"
"sound."
Dani listened intently, her eyes fixed on the hidden door.
"It came from over there."
Jenny listened intently, holding her breath.
There's nothing there except for the ventilation system.
"There's no sound. Are you sure you didn't hear wrong?"
she says.
Dani remained listening for a long time before slowly exhaling.
"Maybe I was too nervous."
She rubbed her temples.
"Behind this door is a tunnel over twenty kilometers long, with an extremely well-hidden exit. How could he possibly..."
thump.
A muffled thud.
It came from behind the hidden door.
It was very light, like something was pressing against the door panel.
Jenny and Dani both froze.
Boom, boom.
Two taps, and it's even clearer.
It wasn't knocking, it was... footsteps? But there shouldn't be footsteps in a tunnel.
Dani suddenly stood up, hid behind a metal cabinet, cocked her Glock, and pointed it at the hidden door.
Jenny shrank behind the sofa, her eyes wide, gripping the gun tightly in her hand.
The hidden door was silent and unnoticed.
Thirty seconds.
One minute.
There was no further sound.
"Is...is it an echo?"
Jenny asked in a low voice,
"Or is it the sound of the ventilation ducts?"
Dani did not answer.
His eyes were fixed on the tightly closed door, an outward-opening alloy door, but it wasn't locked from the inside for easy and quick evacuation.
However, it's not normally possible to open it from the outside...
Clang!
Something struck the alloy door hard.
The entire door trembled.
Dani's words stuck in her throat.
The two men stared intently at the door.
The next moment, the door, which should have been incredibly heavy, was flung open.
Carl Jensen stood in the shadows of the tunnel behind the door, covered in dirt and cobwebs.
He held a rifle in his left hand, his right hand hanging at his side, palm up, the cross wrapped around his hand reflecting slightly under the lights of the safe house.
He looked at Jenny, his face expressionless.
"Hey~, Jenny~"
The voice was calm, as if greeting an acquaintance.
It's a pity that an axe is missing.
