Chapter 1 Who is the Good Person Who Awakens This
Chapter 1 Who is the Good Person Who Awakens This
Chen Shi felt that the stupidest thing he had ever done in his life was to participate in this interview after his superpowers awakened.
Supernatural Abilities Bureau, interview room.
Three people were sitting behind the table. The one in the middle had three words written on his name tag: Liu Zhengfang.
"What is your special ability?"
Chen Shi squeezed the certificate of superpower awakening hidden in his pocket.
Awakened ability: Telling jokes.
Ability Description: Can create humorous content to disrupt the target's emotional state.
Rating: F--.
F-rank is already the lowest rating in the world of superpowers. If you add two minus signs, it's like a huge, conspicuous crater in a city square.
"Chen Shi." Liu Zhengfang called his name in a languid tone, like a seafood merchant dealing with a salted fish he can never sell. "I'm asking you a question. What is your special ability?"
"Tell a joke." With that, Chen Shi slowly handed over the appraisal report, trying to make his movements appear calm.
Liu Zhengfang took it, glanced at it, and then looked up at Chen Shi, his expression becoming complicated.
"Young man," he said, "this is the Bureau of Supernatural Abilities. Not the Deyun Society."
"I know," Chen Shi argued, "but this is what I've awakened to. I tried it last night; when I told a joke, all the chickens within ten meters of me were flapping their wings."
"chicken?"
"Yes, the chickens at home."
Liu Zhengfang didn't want to talk anymore. He tapped his fingers on the table and said, "Next."
"Wait a minute!" Chen Shi insisted. "Give me a chance. I can demonstrate right here."
Liu Zhengfang rubbed his temples, thought for a few seconds, and then let out a soft "hmm" through his nose.
Chen Shi stood up, took a deep breath, and then spoke.
"There was a person who owned a dog. The dog was very smart; it could fetch newspapers, turn off the lights, and flush the toilet by itself."
Liu Zhengfang remained expressionless.
A friend asked him, "Why don't you teach such a smart dog to talk?"
The interview room was extremely quiet.
Chen Shi's forehead began to sweat, but he still gritted his teeth and continued.
"He said he taught me, I studied for half a year, and I learned it. But the first thing he learned was—'You can eat this lousy dog food yourself.'"
The silence continued, as if the air itself had frozen.
Just as Chen Shi was dejectedly about to walk out, a "poof" sound came from the corner.
Liu Zhengfang turned his head to look. A young female interviewer covered her mouth, her entire face flushed red. She tried to hold it in, but her violently shaking shoulders wouldn't allow it.
Liu Fangzheng's gaze towards Chen Shi changed. It wasn't the kind of surprise that comes from discovering a genius, but more like the unexpected delight of the cafeteria auntie who found a cabbage mixed in with the cabbages she delivered that day.
He asked, "Does this ability of yours cause the target to temporarily lose control?"
"It's not about losing control of your emotions, but about losing control of your behavior," Chen Shi corrected. "It's about making the other person unable to hold back their laughter."
"So you mean you can't get him to do anything else? Like tell you his bank card PIN?"
"He definitely won't tell," Chen Shi thought for a moment. "But once he breaks down, it's hard to say what will happen next. For example, our chickens laid a lot of eggs today."
Liu Fangzheng's mouth twitched slightly. It wasn't obvious, but Chen Shi noticed it.
Liu Fangzheng thought for a while, then wrote two lines on the appraisal report and pushed the paper back.
"Mental interference technology may have special application value."
"Recommendation for employment: Transfer to the S-class ability user group 'Iron Plum Blossom' as an assistant."
Chen Shi's mind went blank for a few seconds. She had heard the name Tie Meihua too many times. She was Sun Tiemei, the leader of the fifth group of the management bureau. One of the group members, Pang Daqiang, was her childhood friend, a few years older than her, and had joined the bureau two years earlier.
This fat man's superpower is skin hardening; an axe only leaves a white mark on his skin. But at home, his wife still scolds him by pulling his ear. In his words, "My vulnerable side is only for my family."
He had complained to Chen Shi more than once about how terrifying their team leader was, and had also warned Chen Shi: it's best not to go into the bureau, it's a deep and murky place. If you do go in, go anywhere, just don't go to Team Five. The leader of Team Five is like a cold machine, completely devoid of emotion. Avoid being alone with her if you can, and if you see her smile, run away immediately, because that's a sign she's about to take action.
At the time, Chen Shi thought Pang Daqiang was bragging. Now, standing in the conference room, clutching the appraisal report, he suddenly wanted to find Pang Daqiang and tell him to his face: "You're such a jinx!"
"Go report for duty." Liu Fangzheng gestured with his chin toward Chen Shi. "Don't keep Team Leader Tie waiting."
His face was expressionless, but Chen Shi felt it was full of schadenfreude.
The corridor of the Administration Bureau was long and the lighting was a bit glaring. The walls were covered with posters of various superhumans, accompanied by the text "Managing superhuman abilities, serving the people".
As Chen Shi walked past the poster, it seemed as if the people in the painting were looking at him with pity.
He took out his phone and sent a message to Pang Daqiang. A long time passed before a reply came back with just two words: "Take care."
Chen Shi stood in front of the Fifth Group's office, where the nameplate read: S-Sun Tiemei.
He raised his hand and knocked on the door.
"Enter."
As soon as I pushed the door open, the temperature inside dropped instantly.
A woman stood with her back to him in front of the floor-to-ceiling window. She wore a dark gray coat and stood ramrod straight.
"Are you the new assistant assigned to me by the bureau?" She didn't turn around.
"Yes...yes, Team Leader Tie." Chen Shi stammered. He suddenly remembered Pang Daqiang's words about not being in the same space as her, and sure enough, his heart was already racing.
Sun Tiemei turned around. She wasn't particularly beautiful, but her features were very defined, especially her eyes, which were incredibly cold, the kind that could make a person shiver.
"Your ability is telling jokes." This is not a question.
"Yes."
"What are the effects?"
"It can make the other person laugh."
"Then tell me one," she said. "If I don't laugh, you'll be reporting to the logistics department to clean the toilets."
Looking at Sun Tiemei's face, Chen Shi knew she was no joke. So, to avoid cleaning toilets, he began his story with a touch of tragic grandeur: "There was a guy who ate sugar-free cookies for three months and gained eight pounds. He angrily flipped the packaging over to look at the ingredient list and found that after the words 'sugar-free,' printed in microscope-sized print—'But we have sugar's relatives, sugar's friends, sugar's distant cousins, and sugar itself has changed its name.'"
The office was so quiet that only Chen Shi's own breathing could be heard.
But three seconds later, the corners of Sun Tiemei's mouth turned up slightly, very subtly.
But Chen Shi saw it.
He is now very sensitive to the action of laughing, which is a skill brought about by his superpower.
Then Pang Daqiang's warning came back to his mind: if she laughs, run away immediately!
Chen Shi turned and ran. He had only taken two steps.
"stop."
He immediately stopped.
"Turn around."
He executed a standard military maneuver of turning around, accompanied by the sound of his foot hitting the ground.
Sun Tiemei's expression remained cold.
"Report here at 8:00 AM sharp tomorrow morning. If you're even one minute late, you'll be reporting to the logistics department."
When Chen Shi walked out of the office and downstairs, he almost did a somersault on the stairs because his legs went weak.
He took out his phone; Pang Daqiang had already sent him several messages.
The latest message reads: "I've found out why your previous assistant resigned."
"What's the reason?" Chen Shi replied.
"Depression."
That night, Chen Shi kept having the same dream: a huge block of ice kept chasing him, tapping him on the head as it ran, saying, "Why don't you tell jokes?"
